Massive Fire in Alex - London Road Closed

Gift of the Givers teams are on site in Alexandra where a massive fire has displaced hundreds of people. The fire is still smouldering. Exact details as to the cause, loss of lives, number of homes destroyed, numbers of people displaced, extent of material loss is not quantifiable currently.Gift of the Givers have moved a mother who gave birth yesterday and another mother with four children who lost everything in the fire, to our Logistics Centre in Bramley. Our teams are registering the rest of the victims and transporting them to a nearby hall where we are providing food, bottled water, blankets and mattresses. During the course of today further appropriate interventions will be effected.

Gift of the Givers assisted Disaster Management at the Boosens Informal Settlement - Ward 124, where 30 shacks were burnt. 50 people were affected. 30 food parcels, 30 blankets, nappies and Red Lion noodles were handed over to assist the shack dwellers. Fortunately no injuries or deaths were reported.

The fire, caused by an unattended candle, started yesterday morning at around 03:00. Approximately 263 people affected with 1 fatality and a few burn wounds.

70 shacks burnt down in Region F on Friday evening at the Denver informal settlement at approximately 23h30. The cause of the fire is unknown. Sadly an elderly lady lost her life as a result of smoke inhalation and 150 people including children were affected by devastating fire.
