2008 Response to Violence
The fighting between the Sudanese armed forces and Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) devastated the main town of Abyei, which has been virtually destroyed. Almost the entire local population has fled to towns in the north and south seeking refuge. Abyei, located in the center of Sudan, and its surroundings, had a population of approximately 150,000 people prior to the fighting.
Due to the violence, people have had no choice but to abandon their homes and all of their belongings and in the height of the rainy season the living conditions became deplorable. There is urgent need for shelter, food, medicine and potable water. The nutritional situation deteriorates quickly. Thousands urgently fled to a town called Juba on foot or in trucks to avoid the violent fighting.
The Gift of the Givers team arrives at the Juba Airport in Sudan carrying 40 tons of emergency relief on a Jumbo cargo airplane on 22 August 2008. Ravhudzulo.
