Qurbani (Animal Sacrifice)

During the 12th month of the Islamic calendar, named Zil Hajj (the month of pilgrimage), Muslims worldwide, if they have the means, are exhorted to perform an animal sacrifice in honour of the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) who was prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail (peace be upon him). This was a test of obedience from the Almighty for both father and son. They not only passed with flying colours but will be honoured to eternity for their discipline. Every year on the 10th day of Zil Hajj 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide (with ever increasing numbers) will remember these great prophets who are common to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The sacrifice has to be donated to the poor. The donor is allowed to keep a portion if he/she so desires. Traditionally Gift of the Givers performs this act of sacrifice in the rural areas of Mauritania and Senegal for the meat that reaches the recipients is the only meat they eat in one calendar year.

This duty is incumbent on all Muslims of means be it modest or handsome. The price per share is R750. Please deposit into Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, Account No. 052137228, Branch Code 057525. Deposit slip to zohradbn@giftofthegivers.org indicating number of shares.
