Feeding in Somalia

On the surface it appears that this is just ordinary feeding in Ramadaan. The reality is far more complex. Somalia is a country at war with itself for more than two decades now. An unstable political situation, attacks from El Shabbab, regular change in government, the difficulty in stabilising the economy, brain drain with most educated Somalis living outside the country and regular drought has impacted tremendously on its people.

Gift of the Givers first got involved in 2011 with the massive famine in that year. The whole of South Africa stood behind us. We have been there ever since providing food parcels, nutritional supplementation, medical services, hygiene packs, water through tankers and boreholes, taking care of orphans, widows, physically and mentally challenged.

In these pictures meals are provided for orphan girls and the homeless in the streets of Mogadishu. A seemingly simple act but the psychological impact is immense.
